Mixing Within the Limit: SPL Applications for Front of House Engineers.

This is a Level 1 session, hosted by Rational Acoustics and taught by Michael Lawrence with special guests Jim Yakabuski, Ryan John, Ken “Pooch” Van Druten, Kevin McCoy, and Chris Leonard.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This session will help FOH mix engineers from all backgrounds understand the basics of SPL and Smaart’s powerful SPL toolset. We’ll cover some advanced applications to achieve full, impactful, dynamic mixes, even when bound by level restrictions – learn how to “mix around the meter.” You’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions about these concepts in our open discussion with mixing experts from various parts of the industry. Special guests include touring concert FOH mixer Jim Yakabuski (FOH, Peter Frampton, Gwen Stefani, Journey), FOH mixer Ryan John (Jessie J, OneRepublic, Tove Lo), FOH mixer Ken “Pooch” Van Druten (Iron Maiden, Linkin Park, Justin Bieber), touring theatrical mixer Kevin McCoy (Hamilton) and worship audio mixer Chris Leonard (ValleyPoint Church, Glen Mills PA).

ABOUT SMAART ONLINE LAB SESSIONS

Smaart Online Lab Sessions are in-depth presentations on select topics building upon the foundation established from the Smaart Operator Fundamentals course content. These sessions include demonstrations and in-depth discussions on the chosen topic. Each session will run between 90 minutes and 2 hours. Attendance is limited to a maximum of 16 attendees to enhance direct student-instructor interaction.

Smaart Online Lab Sessions are conducted via Zoom. Registered attendees will be emailed a session link and password, along with instructions for joining the session, approximately 48 hours prior to the session start time. Please be sure your computer and internet connection meet Zoom’s minimum system requirements and that your webcam and microphone are working prior to joining the session. Refunds will not be issued for missed sessions due to attendee computer problems.

Smaart Online Lab Sessions are conducted live, and the sessions will not be archived for later viewing. Please be sure you are available to attend the session in-person prior to registering.

PREREQUISITES

Course is open to all interested persons. Prior measurement / system alignment experience is not required, but is helpful. This course does assume a working knowledge of professional sound system engineering practices and basic audio fundamentals.
