Level 2 Smaart Applications - System Optimization: Timing, Averaging and “ReLePT”

Level 2 Smaart Applications Training - System Optimization: Timing, Averaging and the process of “ReLePT.”

This is a Level 2 Smaart Online Lab session, hosted by Rational Acoustics and taught by Jamie Anderson.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

The most common applications of Smaart in professional audio are in sound system commissioning and alignment – the tasks of verifying that our equipment is operating properly, diagnosing and fixing what is not, and subsequently managing and optimizing the interactions between sources to achieve our desired results. Sound system “optimization” is the management of many interrelated elements, and the final result represents the sum total of a series of decisions made by an engineer. In this session we examine Smaart’s role in assisting us in working through these tasks and decisions.

The session begins by examining the general process and goals of sound system alignment, the tasks involved and the decisions required, and then offers a methodological process for working through them, “optimizing our compromises,” using Smaart as a tool to guide and inform these decisions.

Within the context of sound system optimization, we will dig into the measurement capabilities available to us in Smaart and discuss the benefits of single-channel and dual-channel measurements, as well as frequency and time-based analysis. We will examine the basic mechanics of this dual-channel FFT measurement platform, and how our measurement and display parameters direct its data’s usability. We will learn how to leverage data analysis techniques like temporal and spatial averaging, and trend identification tools like smoothing and banding to produce more relevant and reliable information. Ultimately, the engineer makes the decisions, but understanding this tool on a deeper level will greatly improve the ability to get reliable, actionable information from Smaart to inform those choices.

ABOUT SMAART ONLINE LAB SESSIONS
