Pittsburgh, PA Smaart Operator: Fundamentals - September 2026

2-Day Smaart Operator: Fundamentals Training Class hosted by Rational Acoustics and taught by Gavin Canaan.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

The 2-day Smaart Operator: Fundamentals class covers the fundamentals of setting up and configuring a Smaart measurement rig and using Smaart to make basic RTA, Spectrograph, Transfer Function and Impulse Response measurements.

Special attention is paid throughout the course to the subject of how to make valid and useful measurements, as opposed to simply making cool squiggly lines appear on the screen. This course begins with an overview of both the general system measurement theory involved as well as the operational context in which Smaart is used, namely in Sound System Engineering and Alignment. This course focuses on providing the attendee with a functional knowledge of how Smaart operates as a tool before expanding to the application of that tool in sound system engineering, and as much as possible, examines data interpretation as much as acquisition.

Smaart Operator Fundamentals is certified for 6.5 Renewal Units (RU’s) for the InfoComm (Avixa) CTS, CTS-D and CTS-I programs.

Class price includes class materials, breakfast & lunch on all class days, class t-shirt and a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of the class. A $250 deposit is due at the time of registration to secure your spot in the class, with the balance due 2 weeks prior to the class start date. Or, you can choose to pay the class fee in-full at the time of registration. Class fees may be paid via credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover). Every class attendee is entitled to a discount on Smaart v9 perpetual licenses. You can purchase a license at the time of registration and upon successful processing of your registration and payment, a license code will be emailed to you along with activation instructions. Licenses will only be emailed upon payment in-full of class registration fees, so if you choose to only pay the deposit at the time of registration, your license will not be emailed to you until the balance is paid 2 weeks prior to the class start date.

If you choose not to purchase a license during the registration process, you will be emailed a coupon code upon completion of the class to purchase a discounted license from our online store. Coupons are valid for 90 days after the class.

The measurement signals used in the instruction of the Operator Fundamentals class will be distributed using a Dante audio network. Class attendees must bring a laptop computer with both the latest version of Smaart v9 measurement software and Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS) installed. A 30 day demo version of Smaart v9 is available online at this link. Dante Virtual Soundcard can be obtained from the Audinate (Dante Virtual Soundcard’s manufacturer) web site at www.audinate.com either by purchase or via a temporary trial installation.
