Smaart Online Lab: SPL Applications.
This is a Level 1 session, hosted by Rational Acoustics and taught by Michael Lawrence.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This session is a deeper dive into Smaart’s SPL toolset, and will examine the use of multiple SPL metrics concurrently to gain more context about a signal’s characteristics, along with techniques to allow a mix engineer to mix with impact and dynamic range, even in the face of SPL restrictions.

SPL measurement is becoming an increasingly important part of the live audio measurement toolset, both for purposes of information and consistency, and for compliance with sound exposure and noise pollution legislation. But the “dB Police” don’t have to be a mix engineer’s nemesis, and SPL measurement can be more than just an enforcement tool.

ABOUT SMAART ONLINE LAB SESSIONS

Smaart Online Lab Sessions are in-depth presentations on select topics building upon the foundation established from the Smaart Operator Fundamentals course content. These sessions include demonstrations and in-depth discussions on the chosen topic. Each session will run between 90 minutes and 2 hours. Attendance is limited to a maximum of 16 attendees to enhance direct student-instructor interaction.

Smaart Online Lab Sessions are conducted via Zoom. Registered attendees will be emailed a session link and password, along with instructions for joining the session, approximately 48 hours prior to the session start time. Please be sure your computer and internet connection meet Zoom’s minimum system requirements and that your webcam and microphone are working prior to joining the session. Refunds will not be issued for missed sessions due to attendee computer problems.

Smaart Online Lab Sessions are conducted live, and the sessions will not be archived for later viewing. Please be sure you are available to attend the session in-person prior to registering.

PREREQUISITES

Course is open to all interested persons. Prior measurement / system alignment experience is not required, but is helpful. This course does assume a working knowledge of professional sound system engineering practices and basic audio fundamentals. If you have any questions concerning course prerequisites, please do not hesitate to contact Rational Acoustics prior to registration.

The Smaart Online Lab: SPL Applications class is approved for 1 Renewal Unit (RU) in the Avixa CTS, CTS-D and CTS-I Certification Programs.
